Chaos In The Desert

Last updated: 23 Fast 1 / 2 September 2005

Current Status

Hxaosanto is making plans to move back to Arizona during the month of Fast 1/September 2005 (exact day and method of travel currently unknown). He possibly has crashspaces in Tucson and Bisbee, and maybe in Arivaca. He will be effectively traveling as a wandering homeless hermit, camping and couchsurfing, while searching for land. He has been in contact with a couple in Tucson who have very similar ideas and wish to discuss the possibility of pooling our efforts.

Location and Size

There is no physical monastery yet. No specific location has been chosen, although we are searching for property in southeastern and south-central Arizona or maybe southwestern New Mexico. This area has a mild climate due to its elevation (over 4300, and up to over 6000, feet above sea level). Yes, it's desert, but it doesn't get up to 120F like in Phoenix; average temps are very pleasant. There is a rainy season which occurs during the monsoon in August and September. Land is reasonably priced. Amenities (shopping, colleges, entertainment, hiking, camping, international travel, etc.) are within easy reach. Mexico, with inexpensive shopping and entertainment, is only a few miles away. Many successful farms are also located in this area.

To give a more precise idea of location, I've looked in the Sulphur Springs Valley (between Bisbee and Douglas, Arizona); around Arivaca, Arizona; and near Rodeo and Deming, New Mexico. In the map below, the "western bloc" is around Arivaca, and the "eastern bloc" is from Bisbee to east of Rodeo. I'm currently looking at some mountaintop parcels around the Sulphur Springs valley; one is in the Perilla mountains a few miles NE of Douglas, AZ.

Each area has its own pros and cons:

Ideas About The Monastery

The property will be at least 5 acres in size, preferably more like 10 to 20 acres. This will allow enough space to build the monastery complex, along with meditation paths and alternate temples, and will allow the monks to wander a bit for solitude. It will also provide a buffer zone between the monastery and their neighbors, if any.

The monastery complex will be about 1/4 of an acre in size. It will be surrounded by an 8' to 10' high adobe wall which will contain one main gate. Inside the complex will be the monastery office, kitchen/dining area, monk's cells, main temple, and mini-temple. There will also be a large open area for group exercises.

The monastery as described on this page would be able to house 8 to 10 monks full-time or more part-time. It would also be large enough to allow daily retreats and events of up to about 30 people.

Monastery Buildings

(The following descriptions may completely change. No "hard and fast" design plans have been drawn up, and the monastery could look significantly different than how it is described below. This is only one way - out of billions - that this could be done. - Hxa)

Inside the monastery complex, there will be multiple structures. Picture the monastery complex as a rectangle about twice as wide as it is tall (my working diagram is 55'x100', for example, but that may change a bit).

Along one long side are the monks' cells, probably 8 to 10 of them. These cells are about 10' square or so. Along the front of the cells is a covered walkway. Each cell has a door which opens to the walkway. One of these cells can be used a quiet space/mini-temple, if unoccupied.

Along one short side of the complex are three rooms: the office, the kitchen/dining room, and the showers/restrooms. The office is about 10' square and contains a desk, computer with Internet connection, and all the legal and financial documentation for the monastery. The kitchen/dining room is about 10' by 20'. It contains a table large enough for all the monks, a stove/oven, three-basin dishwashing sink, microwave, refrigerator, and other assorted cooking and eating utensils. The showers/restroom is about 10' by 15', and contains at least 2 showers and two composting toilets.

Along the other short side of the complex is the main temple. It is octagonal in shape, about and two stories tall, with an octagon cupola on the top which has a Chaosphere perched at its apex. The temple is about 40' across.

Monastery Land

As noted above, the land will be at least 5 acres in size, the complex covering about 1/4 of an acre or so. The rest of the land will be used for various purposes.

Outside the monastery walls will be a large garden. By growing edible native plants and using various water conservation techniques, all vegetables and herbs consumed by the monks will eventually be grown here. The garden may also include a small-livestock area, probably with rabbits and chickens, which will also be used for food. There will also be fruit trees, berries, and grapes (both for eating and for wine).

Also outside the walls will be various meditation areas, shrines, and possibly other temples. Other ideas could include shrines for magickians who adhere to a religious or philosophical practice, such as Buddhism, Taoism, Vulcan Logic, or Gnostic Christianity. These shrines could also be used for those magickians who are temporarily embracing one of those belief systems for their own purposes. They could also be used by minority religious groups in the area (Buddhist, Muslim, alternative Christian, etc.) as worship centers.
